On October 27, we’ll discuss Whose Body?: a Lord Peter Wimsey Mystery by Dorothy Sayers. This mystery, first published in 1927, introduces Lord Peter Wimsey, whose wealth, social standing, and relative youth serve him well as an amateur detective called in by an architect friend to solve the puzzle of the body in his bathtub. The body is “a tall, stout man of about fifty” wearing a pair of gold pince-nez eyeglasses, with flea bites, smelling of soap, and has tobacco-stained teeth. Just as Lord Peter and his professional companion in crime Charles Parker begin to try to identify the corpse, a prominent financier, Sir Reuben Levy, is reported missing. Wimsey’ nemesis at Scotland Yard, the inept inspector Sugg, immediately leaps to the conclusion that the body is Levy’s, and Lord Peter must investigate the identity of the body, why it is in the bathtub, and who could have killed him.

On November 24, Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear will be discussed. The novel begins in 1929, featuring Maisie Dobbs, a humble housemaid who has climbed the British social ladder becoming in turn a university student, a wartime nurse, and now a private investigator. Her first case, which begins as a simple investigation into a woman’s fascination with a dead man, leads her on the trail of a group of injured soldiers lured to a convalescent home in Kent. Masie sends an undercover assistant into the retreat to discover what happened to Vincent. Winner of the Macavity Award and Malice Domestic Award, Publisher’s Weekly says, “A refreshing heroine, appealing secondary characters, and an absorbing plot..”

On December 8, we will hold our fifth annual Mystery celebration open discussion. Come ready to discuss your favorite mysteries, or listen to others describe their favorites. This informal discussion includes refreshments, lively discussion, and reading tips. Non-mystery fans are also warmly welcomed.
